Species composition, substrate specificity, and seasonal abundance of periphytic algae in a tropical riverine system Periyar, India

The study was conducted to assess the species composition, substrate specificity, and seasonal abundance of periphytic algae from river Periyar. Monthly samples were collected for one year (June 2016 – May 2017) different substrates five selected stations. Eight physicochemical variables such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, chloride, sulfate, nitrate, phosphate also monitored during study. Taxonomic studies recorded 156 belonging 56 genera, 36 families, 5 classes. Naviculaceae most abundant family followed by Fragilariaceae Pinnulariaceae. principal component analysis revealed dominance in pre-monsoon period. Canonical correspondence indicates sulfate plays a crucial role algal assemblages. Correspondence percentage among showed preference leaf primary colonization subsequent succession. signifies importance substratum environmental dynamics community composition abundance.
